QQI Level 5 Component Certificate In Care of the Older Person

The Care of the Older Person component is a QQI Level 5 Minor Award which is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to support and meet the needs of older people and to care effectively and to a high standard using best practice while adhering to current legislative and regulatory requirements.  This programme is offered on a part-time or blended learning basis.  Learners will develop an understanding of the concept of the ageing process and explore ways to enhance the quality of life of the older person.  The programme enables learners to acquire the skills to meet the needs of the older person and to understand the role of the healthcare assistant in promoting a positive attitude to ageing and death and dying.  Learners develop the skills necessary to deliver best practice associated with the provision of holistic care and to explore the range of services available to older people. Learners are encouraged to take a proactive role in health promotion and to gain knowledge of basic therapeutic intervention skills.  The importance of communication is emphasised throughout the programme.  Learners are required to complete 30 hours of work placement in a suitable healthcare setting where they are provided with opportunities to put what they learn through their studies, into practice.

NOTE: For many settings, learners will be required to have completed Manual Handling and Cardiac First Responder training in advance of work placement.

Entry Requirements:

Learners must complete 40 hours’ work placement in a nursing home, hospital or day care centre.

No prior skills, knowledge or competence in the award subject matter will be required of the learner for successful entry to the programme; but learners will be expected to have a minimum of Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate standard of education or equivalent and/or experience.  Proficiency in English language is required, together with a strong interest in (subject).
Learners whose first language is not English will be required to provide proof of proficiency in the English language through satisfactory performance on an internationally recognised test (e.g. IELTS 5.5) or other similar English Language qualifications.

Progressive College are committed to providing equal access to education and equal opportunities for mature students (23 years +).  Mature applicants do not need to match school-leavers in terms of academic achievement, provided there is evidence of the ability to pursue and benefit from the course, but candidates must be 23 years of age or over on the 1st January of the year of entry to their programme of study.  Mature students must also have proficiency in the English language.

Assessment / Examinations:

Continuous assessment consists of a Project and Practical Skills Demonstrations. Learners must also complete 40 hours work placement.

Alternative assessments are in place to facilitate students who are unable to find placement due to current L5 COVID19 restrictions.
